Week of October 24th - October 28th

Hello families, This week we had the opportunity to take a walk to the pond and really assess the trees around us. The students observed the difference in needle bundles, margins, leaf types and arrangements. We also dived into tree cookies and students practiced looking at a cross section of a tree to find the various information you can learn from the tree growth shown.  In Social Studies we have looked at the 4 pillars of democracy in Canada and have started an image project for students to create images to represent each pillar. We will be wrapping up our understanding of democracy so we can move into historical models of democracy.  In Math this week, Grade 6 students wrapped up Factors, Multiples and Prime Factorization with a quiz. They have been challenged with word multiplication and division problems and order of operations throughout the week. Grade 5's, continued working with multiplication and applying the box method strategy for 2 by 1 multiplication and relating it

Hello families, Another great week of learning! As a school we participated in "Take Me Outside Day" and it was amazing to see the students interact with nature and each other as we explored the outdoors.  This week we began categorizing trees using the dichotomous key and looking at the characteristics of trees and leaves. We learned the parts of the tree and students were tasked with being able to take information and put it into their own words. We have been creating a unit concept map for Science so that the students can refer to it and review the information as the unit goes on. We had an open book test today where the students could use the information they have on their concept map to ensure they are keeping up with the information as we go.  Bad Picture Day stories are due on Monday. Students have had plenty of time this week to edit their stories and finish them up. Their job is to only write 6 paragraphs, one for each event. This is homework if it is not complete!

Week of October 11th - October 14th

Hello Families, I hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving.  This week we learned how to classify leaves based on their characteristics and are moving into learning about different types of trees and parts of the tree.  We reviewed the advantages and disadvantages of different ways groups makes decisions and discussed different situations where equity and equality are considered and where different different decision making may be beneficial.  We have continued our "Worst Picture Day Ever" writing. We have taken time to practice using proper dialogue within our story as well. Students will be revising and writing their good copies next week in Google Classroom.  For Math, Grade 6's worked with multiples in math to create a plan for the mock scenario of selling frozen yogurt and donating the profits. They also began prime factorization (factor trees). Grade 5's continued to develop their strategies to multiply 2 digit by 2 digit numbers. Upcoming dates: October 18- P

Week of October 3rd - October 7th

What a great week! Students were tasked with sending their parents an email yesterday to reflect on their first month of school and the accomplishments they have had so far. As we brainstormed all of our activities on the board, the students were impressed with just how much they have done already this year.  This week we have been working on our Bad Picture Day stories and the students have been challenged to write one event a day to slow down their thinking and make sure they are connecting all of their events. Each event can only be one paragraph and students are doing a really great job being creative in this assignment. In Science we have been exploring the water cycle and transpiration. Students are finishing up making a comic of a water cycle which goes through the process of transpiration and throughout the rest of the water cycle. In Social Studies we started our first venture into research as the students were given a textbook chapter to sort through and identify 10 key point
