Week of September 26th - September 30th

Hello families, What a lovely week! Students have been engaging in Orange Shirt Day reflections and activities throughout the week leading up to Truth and Reconciliation Day. It has been nice to see how the students engage with the subject matter and show respect in the conversations they have around the purpose of Orange Shirt Day.  In Math we have looked at Factors and Multiples in the Grade 6 community. Students have explored factor trees and building factors of a product as well as finding the Greatest Common Factor and Least Common Multiple of two numbers. The Grade 5 community have begun to look at multiplication through patterns, visualizing and exploring.   In Social Studies, students have started defining citizenship and what that looks like in Canada. Our book "Ban this Book" has been mentioning the "Bill of Rights" and students had an opportunity to explore that and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms this week.  In Science we have tackled the Nutrient Cy

Week of September 19th - September 23rd

Hello families, Thank you to everyone who came to Meet the Teacher! It was great to connect with you all and see each other in person.  We have been working on our reading timelines this week and the students seem to love it. Although we didn't finish them for Thursday, the amount of time and effort they are putting in is definitely worth giving them a couple extra days to complete the task. I am sure they will be very happy to bring them home in a couple of weeks to show you as well.  In Social Studies we have continued our focus on mapping. This is to ensure they are grounded in understanding Canada, how it is broken up and the different places we will be talking about as we discuss citizenship and government. In Grade 6 Math we worked on comparing numbers this week and rounding. We completed our "Candy Rush" place value problem and students explored comparing and rounding decimal numbers.  In Grade 5 Math they explored different ways to regroup numbers and worked on ge

Week of September 12th - September 16th

We survived our first full week! It was a great week with wonderful weather which made going outside and enjoying the fresh air a real treat.  We have spent time this week ensuring students know both their emails and passwords and are able to connect with our Google Classroom. Each student was tasked with sending an email about themselves as a learner to myself to practice sending a proper and professional email. Students are in charge of keeping track of their own email and password this year so they have access to Google Classroom and their emails both at school and at home.  In Science, we began looking at the levels of the forest. Students were challenged with finding examples of organisms that would be in each level of the forest. If it is  not complete, it is homework . We defined what producers, consumers, decomposers are, and create a flip book to show examples. In writing, we have started exploring story writing using picture prompts this week, having students create short sto

Week of September 6th - September 9th

We had a great week even though it was only 4 days of learning! We took the opportunity to be outside journaling, looking at natural objects.  In Science, we began our unit on Trees and Forests. We looked at why the forest is important and different ways we use the forest. We explored issues that arise with trees and ways we can protect trees to ensure we have prospering forests. We began the novel "Ban this Book". It has great connections to decision making which will be part of Social Studies this year as well as advocacy. Students also had the opportunity to visit the library and pick out books. Books are allowed to be brought home (I'm really encouraging them to read nightly) and return for Monday's library day.  In writing, we explored mentor texts based on personal stories. Our next steps will be to write about different personal experiences and draw out our inner storytelling skills.  In math, we have be working with different challenges to help us activate our
