Week of September 6th - September 9th

We had a great week even though it was only 4 days of learning! We took the opportunity to be outside journaling, looking at natural objects.

In Science, we began our unit on Trees and Forests. We looked at why the forest is important and different ways we use the forest. We explored issues that arise with trees and ways we can protect trees to ensure we have prospering forests.

We began the novel "Ban this Book". It has great connections to decision making which will be part of Social Studies this year as well as advocacy. Students also had the opportunity to visit the library and pick out books. Books are allowed to be brought home (I'm really encouraging them to read nightly) and return for Monday's library day.

In writing, we explored mentor texts based on personal stories. Our next steps will be to write about different personal experiences and draw out our inner storytelling skills.

In math, we have be working with different challenges to help us activate our mathematical thinking. We have built shapes, tried to solve the value of shapes, figure out different numbers to multiply and even did a check in to see what we remembered from last year. Starting Monday, we will be splitting into grade 5 and 6 math groups taught by the 5/6 team and Ms. Copithorne.

We have also worked on our social emotional learning about how to be a good classmate, active listener and how to work as a group. Our first focused health lesson was on respect-what it looks like, sounds like, feels like.

The Google Classroom will be up this week. Students will receive an invitation to join in their CBE email. If you are new to the school, we are still in the process of activating accounts. At this time, there are no assignments posted. It will be used occasionally through the year, mostly as a place to post resources for assignments or hand in assignments completed digitally.
