Week of January 9th - January 13th

 Hello families,

Happy Friday the 13th! It has been a great week back with the kids, I hope they have been excited as well. 

This week we jumped back into Ancient Athens and wrapped up our first unit studying a historical model of democracy. We ended the unit with a bang with our first debate. Debating is a great way to see their confidence in the material as well as their ability to express their opinions and facts mixing in ELA into their Social Studies assignment. They had to spend time collaborating and researching and we are making progress on our ability to take jot notes and summarize important information. They did great and I hope they take what they have learned into our next debate in the second term. 

In Math the 5's explored measurement and perimeter while the 6's were challenged with problem solving questions that incorporated different skills we have learned this year. As the classes start to go to Open Minds next week, we will have an opportunity to mix our 5's and 6's together again and work through geometry as a whole class. 

Speaking of Open Minds... THANK YOU we have three volunteers added to our list this week!! Unfortunately due to police checks I may be losing two volunteers as well (Monday and Tuesday are looking to be at risk of having too little). Again I ask if you are able and are already cleared to volunteer (police checks won't come in in time if submitted this week) it would be amazing to have you join us! 

If you hear the desperation in my voice and think you can swing a Monday or Tuesday (and are already cleared to volunteer), signing up would be amazing!!

We had a great week even though it was only 4 days of learning! We took the opportunity to be outside journaling, looking at natural objects.  In Science, we began our unit on Trees and Forests. We looked at why the forest is important and different ways we use the forest. We explored issues that arise with trees and ways we can protect trees to ensure we have prospering forests. We began the novel "Ban this Book". It has great connections to decision making which will be part of Social Studies this year as well as advocacy. Students also had the opportunity to visit the library and pick out books. Books are allowed to be brought home (I'm really encouraging them to read nightly) and return for Monday's library day.  In writing, we explored mentor texts based on personal stories. Week of April 10th - April 14th

 Hello families, I sent home the field trip forms this week. On the form, it says they are due today but if they could be in by Wednesday April 14th that would be amazing. Alien In-Line has been awesome, I hope the kids are having fun. We have one more session next week!  This week students worked on their research for essays. They need to have this done for Monday so that we can begin writing our essays on Monday. We will be going through how to write an introduction paragraph on Monday and they will spend their time writing their own introduction.  This next week is our last week for book clubs. Students will be handing in their book club tasks and receiving a mark for the depth and completion of their tasks. They will have a final task introduced next week.  In Math, Grade 6 students have wrapped up algebra and patterns and we are moving into geometry. We will be learning about shapes and angles. Week of April 24th - April 28th

 Hello families, It was a great first week starting our Trickster residency. The students are creating a performance around the theme respecting others. There will be an opportunity to see the performance next Thursday, more information to come from Mr. Lang.  In math, Grade 6 students have wrapped up their understanding of angles, polygons and triangles. They are able to measure with a protractor as well as draw their own angles. They created a quilt on graph paper to show the different angles and explained the angles they used in their patterns. The Grade 5 students have been exploring volume and measurement and have started planting a garden to help with measurement and graphing later on.  In Social Studies we have been exploring the services and roles within local government.
