Week of November 28th - December 2nd

 Hello families,

We are back to the groove of having school on Friday's! Students got to spend their math time participating in a conjecture today with the other 5/6 communities and complete a 5 minute frenzy which it feels like we haven't done in ages. 

This week students finished their fractured fairy tales (they were warned it is homework if they are still not done). We took a step back and are taking a look at how to properly structure a paragraph. We practiced with an opinion paragraph and we will experiment with some informative paragraph writing next week. Students were challenged with a timed story prompt today. Ask them what they wrote about and if they were able to complete it in the hour! 

In Grade 6 Math, students are continuing their look at division. We will be wrapping this up soon and moving into some area and perimeter before the break. Grade 5's have been looking at division strategies and the connections between multiplication and division. 

Students will be completing their reader responses on Monday's. Our Library block is on Monday so they should be picking a book that sustains them and challenges them for at least one week! I am working on finding these challenges for them that mix with their interests as well.

 Happy June! If you would like to order this month's fun lunch, head to  Healthy Hunger  to order before Saturday!  This week we have been spending more time with our poetry and how to respond and reflect to the poetry we are reading. We went to the pond and wrote some poetry as well amongst the ducks and geese. Students have continued their practice with figurative language and identifying its meaning and purpose within a text.  Grade 6's have been creating surveys for their class to complete so that they can create different graphs and present the information they have learned. Week of September 6th - September 9th

We had a great week even though it was only 4 days of learning! We took the opportunity to be outside journaling, looking at natural objects.  In Science, we began our unit on Trees and Forests. We looked at why the forest is important and different ways we use the forest. We explored issues that arise with trees and ways we can protect trees to ensure we have prospering forests. We began the novel "Ban this Book". It has great connections to decision making which will be part of Social Studies this year as well as advocacy. Students also had the opportunity to visit the library and pick out books. Books are allowed to be brought home (I'm really encouraging them to read nightly) and return for Monday's library day.  In writing, we explored mentor texts based on personal stories. Week of June 5th - June 9th

 Hello families, This week students have been exploring connections in Social Studies and were challenged to write a speech for the Legislative Assembly based around an issue on Provincial Parks. The students that weren't able to complete it have been tasked it for homework this weekend. You can check in on Google Classroom to see how they are able to pick a position and use their understanding to persuade others.  In Math, the grade 6 students have finished up their graphing unit and we have begun reviewing topics. We have started back at place value and I will send home packets of their work at the end of the week for you to see how they are doing on their review. I placed a review checklist in Google Classroom for them to go through and identify areas they feel strongly in and areas they could use some extra review.
