Week of January 23rd - January 27th

What a great week!  This week students continued to adventure into transformations in Math. We will be continuing to explore the cartesian plane and plotting coordinates. In Social Studies, students have been exploring how to create quality discussion questions to prompt conversations with their classmates about the Iroquois Confederacy. Students had a chance to present on their constellation and had another opportunity to demonstrate their research and summarizing skills.  Next week we will be moving beyond the mats and into more gymnastics. That means students need to be coming to school with easily removed jewelry, shirts that can be tucked in, comfortable clothing and bare feet!  Report cards will be available online on Monday, January 30th.  Lastly, w e have had a lot of problems with soccer and demonstrating good sportmanship. Soccer has been in a "timeout" for 3 days to allow for some time to reflect about behaviour and work through some of the issues. We will review e

Week of January 16th - January 20th

Hello families, What a wonderful week of learning. I have had the opportunity to see the Math skills of both the 5's and 6's this week and it has been amazing! We have begun talking about transformations and students have been showing their ability to translate, reflect and rotate polygons. We have spent the first 15 minutes of each math class challenging their mental math strategies in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  In Science, students have continued to explore space and the students spent the week finding ways to represent their understanding of how the sun shines throughout the day. We had an experiment making sundials and testing them throughout the day.  In Social Studies we have started our new unit about the Iroquois Confederacy. The students are starting to venture into the idea of consensus. We read Hiawatha and the Peacemaker which has a lot of quality connections to our Social Studies curriculum.  Thank you for everyone trying to get volunteer

Week of January 9th - January 13th

Hello families, Happy Friday the 13th! It has been a great week back with the kids, I hope they have been excited as well.  This week we jumped back into Ancient Athens and wrapped up our first unit studying a historical model of democracy. We ended the unit with a bang with our first debate. Debating is a great way to see their confidence in the material as well as their ability to express their opinions and facts mixing in ELA into their Social Studies assignment. They had to spend time collaborating and researching and we are making progress on our ability to take jot notes and summarize important information. They did great and I hope they take what they have learned into our next debate in the second term.  In Math the 5's explored measurement and perimeter while the 6's were challenged with problem solving questions that incorporated different skills we have learned this year. As the classes start to go to Open Minds next week, we will have an opportunity to mix our 5
