Week of October 3rd - October 7th

What a great week! Students were tasked with sending their parents an email yesterday to reflect on their first month of school and the accomplishments they have had so far. As we brainstormed all of our activities on the board, the students were impressed with just how much they have done already this year. 

This week we have been working on our Bad Picture Day stories and the students have been challenged to write one event a day to slow down their thinking and make sure they are connecting all of their events. Each event can only be one paragraph and students are doing a really great job being creative in this assignment. In Science we have been exploring the water cycle and transpiration. Students are finishing up making a comic of a water cycle which goes through the process of transpiration and throughout the rest of the water cycle. In Social Studies we started our first venture into research as the students were given a textbook chapter to sort through and identify 10 key points they think were the most important to learn from the chapter.

We had a great week even though it was only 4 days of learning! We took the opportunity to be outside journaling, looking at natural objects.  In Science, we began our unit on Trees and Forests. We looked at why the forest is important and different ways we use the forest. We explored issues that arise with trees and ways we can protect trees to ensure we have prospering forests. We began the novel "Ban this Book". It has great connections to decision making which will be part of Social Studies this year as well as advocacy. Students also had the opportunity to visit the library and pick out books. Books are allowed to be brought home (I'm really encouraging them to read nightly) and return for Monday's library day.  In writing, we explored mentor texts based on personal stories. Week of April 10th - April 14th

 Hello families, I sent home the field trip forms this week. On the form, it says they are due today but if they could be in by Wednesday April 14th that would be amazing. Alien In-Line has been awesome, I hope the kids are having fun. We have one more session next week!  This week students worked on their research for essays. They need to have this done for Monday so that we can begin writing our essays on Monday. We will be going through how to write an introduction paragraph on Monday and they will spend their time writing their own introduction.  This next week is our last week for book clubs. Students will be handing in their book club tasks and receiving a mark for the depth and completion of their tasks. They will have a final task introduced next week.  In Math, Grade 6 students have wrapped up algebra and patterns and we are moving into geometry. We will be learning about shapes and angles. Week of April 24th - April 28th

 Hello families, It was a great first week starting our Trickster residency. The students are creating a performance around the theme respecting others. There will be an opportunity to see the performance next Thursday, more information to come from Mr. Lang.  In math, Grade 6 students have wrapped up their understanding of angles, polygons and triangles. They are able to measure with a protractor as well as draw their own angles. They created a quilt on graph paper to show the different angles and explained the angles they used in their patterns. The Grade 5 students have been exploring volume and measurement and have started planting a garden to help with measurement and graphing later on.  In Social Studies we have been exploring the services and roles within local government.
