Week of March 13th - March 17th

 Dear families,

Happy St Patrick's Day! 

Students have been working hard on finishing up their Iroquois Unit this week. The students will have their test on Monday and have a concept map they did for review to hand in with it! Next we will be looking at the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. 

In science, students have been making experiments with mixtures and mixing/separating mixtures. We are discussing reversible/irreversible changes and chemical changes next week! I hope the more hands on approach has been helping cement the ideas they are learning this unit. 

For Grade 6 math, students have finished up ratios and will be wrapping up their fraction, decimal, percent and ratios unit on Monday. We will be moving in algebra next, I hope they are excited! Grade 5's have been working on fractions and equivalent fractions and will be exploring the relationship between fractions and decimals. 

BOOK CLUBS! Please check in with your kids this weekend as they will have a job to do for Monday. The idea of the jobs is so when they meet, they can discuss the different aspects of the book together and strengthen their comprehension. Students have a template for each of the jobs in their duotangs. This template can be reprinted at home (they are posted on Google Classroom) or recorded on a loose leaf piece of paper if they need to complete the same job again later on in the book. This means the entire sheet is expected to be filled out every time they are assigned this job. I hope they are enjoying getting to interact with the other classes and are finding interest in a new book together.  Happy June! If you would like to order this month's fun lunch, head to  Healthy Hunger  to order before Saturday!  This week we have been spending more time with our poetry and how to respond and reflect to the poetry we are reading. We went to the pond and wrote some poetry as well amongst the ducks and geese. Students have continued their practice with figurative language and identifying its meaning and purpose within a text.  Grade 6's have been creating surveys for their class to complete so that they can create different graphs and present the information they have learned. This ties into their own understanding of how to create surveys, graphs and interpreting the information they have gathered. Week of September 6th - September 9th

We had a great week even though it was only 4 days of learning! We took the opportunity to be outside journaling, looking at natural objects.  In Science, we began our unit on Trees and Forests. We looked at why the forest is important and different ways we use the forest. We explored issues that arise with trees and ways we can protect trees to ensure we have prospering forests. We began the novel "Ban this Book". It has great connections to decision making which will be part of Social Studies this year as well as advocacy. Students also had the opportunity to visit the library and pick out books. Books are allowed to be brought home (I'm really encouraging them to read nightly) and return for Monday's library day.  In writing, we explored mentor texts based on personal stories. Week of June 5th - June 9th

 Hello families, This week students have been exploring connections in Social Studies and were challenged to write a speech for the Legislative Assembly based around an issue on Provincial Parks. The students that weren't able to complete it have been tasked it for homework this weekend. You can check in on Google Classroom to see how they are able to pick a position and use their understanding to persuade others.  In Math, the grade 6 students have finished up their graphing unit and we have begun reviewing topics. We have started back at place value and I will send home packets of their work at the end of the week for you to see how they are doing on their review. I placed a review checklist in Google Classroom for them to go through and identify areas they feel strongly in and areas they could use some extra review.
