Week of April 10th - April 14th

 Hello families,

I sent home the field trip forms this week. On the form, it says they are due today but if they could be in by Wednesday April 14th that would be amazing. Alien In-Line has been awesome, I hope the kids are having fun. We have one more session next week! 

This week students worked on their research for essays. They need to have this done for Monday so that we can begin writing our essays on Monday. We will be going through how to write an introduction paragraph on Monday and they will spend their time writing their own introduction. 

This next week is our last week for book clubs. Students will be handing in their book club tasks and receiving a mark for the depth and completion of their tasks. They will have a final task introduced next week. 

In Math, Grade 6 students have wrapped up algebra and patterns and we are moving into geometry. We will be learning about shapes and angles. In Grade 5 the students have been exploring area and perimeter as well as fractions in Mrs. Copithorne's real world garden. 

We are moving into talking about representation and local government next week for Social Studies and Ms. Connellan will be taking on the new Science unit!

 Happy June! If you would like to order this month's fun lunch, head to  Healthy Hunger  to order before Saturday!  This week we have been spending more time with our poetry and how to respond and reflect to the poetry we are reading. We went to the pond and wrote some poetry as well amongst the ducks and geese. Students have continued their practice with figurative language and identifying its meaning and purpose within a text.  Grade 6's have been creating surveys for their class to complete so that they can create different graphs and present the information they have learned. This ties into their own understanding of how to create surveys, graphs and interpreting the information they have gathered. Week of September 6th - September 9th

We had a great week even though it was only 4 days of learning! We took the opportunity to be outside journaling, looking at natural objects.  In Science, we began our unit on Trees and Forests. We looked at why the forest is important and different ways we use the forest. We explored issues that arise with trees and ways we can protect trees to ensure we have prospering forests. We began the novel "Ban this Book". It has great connections to decision making which will be part of Social Studies this year as well as advocacy. Students also had the opportunity to visit the library and pick out books. Books are allowed to be brought home (I'm really encouraging them to read nightly) and return for Monday's library day.  In writing, we explored mentor texts based on personal stories. Week of June 5th - June 9th

 Hello families, This week students have been exploring connections in Social Studies and were challenged to write a speech for the Legislative Assembly based around an issue on Provincial Parks. The students that weren't able to complete it have been tasked it for homework this weekend. You can check in on Google Classroom to see how they are able to pick a position and use their understanding to persuade others.  In Math, the grade 6 students have finished up their graphing unit and we have begun reviewing topics. We have started back at place value and I will send home packets of their work at the end of the week for you to see how they are doing on their review. I placed a review checklist in Google Classroom for them to go through and identify areas they feel strongly in and areas they could use some extra review.
