Week of April 17th - April 21st

 Hello families,

This coming Tuesday is our last field trip for Arts Commons. We will be attending Step Afrika! which should be a rewarding experience. PLEASE bring in your forms if you haven't yet by Monday or unfortunately you cannot come. 

Students completed their essay writing today, woohoo! If they haven't completed their essay, it is expected to be done by Monday. I am so excited to read them, they really have put so much effort into the research and putting what they have learned into a new organized format. We have started listening to the Mars Patel podcast to connect to the Science Evidence and Investigation unit while having them practice their listening skills and comprehension. 

In Grade 6 Math, students have been exploring new vocabulary with angles and triangles. Students got to practice using a protractor and measure angles as well. In Grade 5 the students have been continuing their real world fraction math and are beginning to connect fractions with decimals as well. 

They have started a new Science unit with Ms. Connellan! It has been great to see their observation skills and the precise vocabulary they need to use to convey their idea. In Social Studies we have continued with Local Government and will be moving into our understanding of bylaws. 

We will be starting Trickster Theatre next week! Please see more details to come from Mr. Lang.

 Happy June! If you would like to order this month's fun lunch, head to  Healthy Hunger  to order before Saturday!  This week we have been spending more time with our poetry and how to respond and reflect to the poetry we are reading. We went to the pond and wrote some poetry as well amongst the ducks and geese. Students have continued their practice with figurative language and identifying its meaning and purpose within a text.  Grade 6's have been creating surveys for their class to complete so that they can create different graphs and present the information they have learned. This ties into their own understanding of how to create surveys, graphs and interpreting the information they have gathered. Week of September 6th - September 9th

We had a great week even though it was only 4 days of learning! We took the opportunity to be outside journaling, looking at natural objects.  In Science, we began our unit on Trees and Forests. We looked at why the forest is important and different ways we use the forest. We explored issues that arise with trees and ways we can protect trees to ensure we have prospering forests. We began the novel "Ban this Book". It has great connections to decision making which will be part of Social Studies this year as well as advocacy. Students also had the opportunity to visit the library and pick out books. Books are allowed to be brought home (I'm really encouraging them to read nightly) and return for Monday's library day.  In writing, we explored mentor texts based on personal stories. Week of June 5th - June 9th

 Hello families, This week students have been exploring connections in Social Studies and were challenged to write a speech for the Legislative Assembly based around an issue on Provincial Parks. The students that weren't able to complete it have been tasked it for homework this weekend. You can check in on Google Classroom to see how they are able to pick a position and use their understanding to persuade others.  In Math, the grade 6 students have finished up their graphing unit and we have begun reviewing topics. We have started back at place value and I will send home packets of their work at the end of the week for you to see how they are doing on their review. I placed a review checklist in Google Classroom for them to go through and identify areas they feel strongly in and areas they could use some extra review.
